Why does HSS use several IPs (DNS servers) when connecting?

Published · updated

We came across a case where a user asked why our app (HSS) when ran against a DNS check does it come back as having 4 to 15 DNS servers connected at once and the user was concerned about any possible leak.

The answer to this question in case you receive a case like this is: "When you visit whoer.net (or some other website that runs DNS checks), it tries to gather information about your current session with its servers. While doing this, it makes multiple parallel requests to try and gather information about what IP each of those requests came to its servers. Since we use a pool of DNS servers, it sees multiple of those IPs when it makes the requests. These are our IPs associated with your VPN session and not your actual IP. Please rest assured, this is not a leak of any sort and is a common practice in our industry."

If you have any questions about this, please ask any of the staff members on the floor.
